but you can do all that reliably w/USB3 as well.ĭifferences for latency for audio devices is negligible for interfaces that use thunderbolt and USB3 and you can get plenty of i/o on either. it's nice for sticking on a dock (once you do a lot of research to find one that has a good chipset/speed etc) so you can add a NAS or RAID array or whatever it is you need. there are so few thunderbolt devices other than mediocre hubs that aren't good for audio that it's almost useless for most people. I wouldn't worry about the ports so much so long as you have lot's of USB3. fast ram and fast storage are essential as well. generally, higher clock speed is better for audio so it's good to find a balance between clock speed and number of cores. what are the specs of each computer and prices?Īnyway. Thank you for any and all positive and helpful input! I'm wondering which would have more muscle power for a higher track count / more plugins etc? I'd be recording in Ableton Live 10. However for the same price I could get a new 2019 iMac 27" 5k - the 3.1 GHz model. I'm currently using a late 2013 Retina MacBook Pro for live so this would be quite bit more muscle power. A friend has a late 2019 Mac Pro for sale (Mac Pro (Late 2013) Processor: 3.5 GHz 6-Core Intel Xeon E5 - 1TB SSD -Memory: 64 GB 1066 MHz DDR3 -Graphics: AMD FirePro D500 3072 MB).
